Learn how to make a fabulous African zebra (like Jessica, pictured) using basic stitches and following a simple pattern.
All materials and equipment are provided and included. You will also get a pattern and instructions that can be kept and used again and again (if you have ambitions for a whole herd!).
All of the fee is used to support the kids in Emma’s and Sophie’s  projects in Kampala – the price is based on the costs for taking one child out of the slums for a day out and one good meal/or the price of a pair of school shoes.

About the Emma and Sophie and their project:
Awamu means ‘together’ in Luganda, the main language spoken in Uganda. We chose it as it reflects the name and spirit of both the women’s groups that we are working with.

The big idea: you get lovely hand-made things to enjoy – women in our projects earn a living – children in their care are healthier, happier and can go to school.

Awamu is about showing you the lovely handmade goods that give the makers an income and raises money to help children born with or orphaned by hiv in two of the poorest areas of Kampala, Uganda.

100% of the money raised from the sale of our lovely handmade things is used to provide small education grants so our kids can complete their basic primary education and give their guardians a small fund help them start up a business so they can feed and care for their families.

Learn how to make bespoke and elegantly lascivious garters. This includes learning what and how to do a French seam (as well as some handstitching) and decorating a garter with ribbons, tassles and vintage charms. Each person will take home their very own personalised garter.

 - ribbons in different colours and widths
 - charms, trinkets, tassles and feathers

About Ninette:
I am an interdisciplinary designer working mainly in textiles and surface design. I graduated from Central St. Martins in 2007 where I developed a bespoke and seductive lingerie collection which was created as a reaction to women’s willingness to suffer for the sake of beauty. These special and painful jewel-encrusted undergarments create intimate and temporary tattoos in secret places on the body.
After graduating I worked as a design assistant for a luxury lingerie label called Bunnies Forever. I was involved in designing and making their second collection, Little Bird. Alongside this, I was also working at the London Metropolitan University as a lecturer.
In January 2009, I set up a bespoke wallpaper practice, Tactile Wonderland, with fellow textile designer, Rebecca Otero. Together we explore the interaction between the product and user through the medium of textiles.

To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Festival of Britain, we will be holding a 1950s inspired textile printing workshop with Gillian from Fabric Nation. Participants will be able to explore our collection of vintage mid-century modern textiles and books on key designers of the era before printing up their own fabric using 1950s and Festival of Britain inspired designs.  Participants will receive step-by-step tutorials on designing and carving their design into lino and then will use non-toxic fabric inks to print a repeat design.
No previous experience is needed and all materials are provided. At the end of the workshop, you will have learnt about mid-century modern textile designers, gained skills in lino printing, designed your own print and produced a piece of hand printed fabric.  The printed fabric will be washable and suitable for making up into a bag cushion, apron, purse, or other accessory.

All materials are provided, including home baked cakes.  Participants will need to bring their own lunch.

No previous printing experience is needed.

In this workshop you will create a small papercutting, either of your own design, or if that seems too scary, then from one of Suzy’s own templates.  You do not need to be able to draw in order to produce a beautiful papercutting.  You will learn what type of design makes a successful papercut and how to use the craft knife to achieve the best results. You will also be shown how to mount your work on backing paper/card.
Each person will leave with at least one finished small papercutting, (15cm x 15cm) complete with backing paper/card and cellophane sleeve to protect your finished artwork.

Please bring along a sketchbook, pencil, eraser and some ideas or pictures for a papercutting.  We will be working on paper which is 15cm x 15cm.  Themes that work well for papercuts are trees, flowers, houses, people – but don’t feel limited to those themes.

Want to give your home a vintage feel?  Taking inspiration from Constance Spry, this workshop will teach you how to make interesting displays in quirky containers (tea cups, tea pots, gravy boats, jars, tins etc) using a selection of seasonal flowers and foliage with a vintage feel.

Have a rummage through your cupboards and dig out your old china to bring along.  During this workshop you will learn the basic mechanics to help you arrange flowers in tricky vases, and come away with lots of ideas of how and where to display your vases for best effect.

We will also cover how to add your own decorative touches to simple household vessels (using fabrics, ribbon, buttons, beads, and foliage) so that you’ll never be short of a vase.

You will also have the opportunity to learn how to make a buttonhole, using one of the new vintage style roses, suitable for a wedding, prom or whatever event requires that extra flourish.

Advice will be given on choosing suitable flowers, and you will be given step--‐by--‐step instructions on how to wire and tape all the components to create a striking addition to your outfit.

Each participant will take home 3 items:
2 x floral arrangements (1 in a container provided by workshop and decorated by participant and 1 container supplied by participant.)
1 x Buttonhole

Bring along your own favourite teacups, teapots, gravy boats, pretty tins, vintage glassware, perfume bottles, etc or anything you’d like advice on arranging flowers in.

Feel free to also bring along vintage fabrics, lace, buttons etc for the decorative touches, but we will have some available for use.

Each person will take home three gorgeous hand painted silk cards, with envelopes, to give to their friends and family or to frame as a piece of art.
All equipment is provided including a whole range of designs, but please bring an apron with you and wear old clothes as the paints will stain.
Note: If you choose a very complex designs then you may only get two cards completed in the time although this is unusual.

Delve into Fabric Nation’s stash of vintage, upcycled and contemporary fabrics and make beautiful brooches. In this workshop you can make several pretty styles of brooch, all deceptively simple to sew. Use them to brighten clothes or bags, wear as a hair accessory or corsage, or make them as gifts for lucky friends. Pair up flowery, polkadot or striped prints, 50s barkcloth and US quilting cottons with vintage buttons, trims and felts to create unique and colourful brooches.  These brooches are deceptively simple to make, perfect for the beginner, and offer more experienced participants a chance to explore different techniques and work with a range of different materials.
Gillian will provide step-by-step tuition in different brooch making techniques and one-to-one help for those with little sewing experience.
At the end of the workshop, you will have learnt several brooch-making techniques and made a collection of brooches, hairclips and alice bands.  Participants make on average two to three brooches during a three-hour workshop.
All materials are provided, including home baked cakes.

Howdy! I am a BA (Hons) Illustration graduate from Kingston University. You can find me and my sewing machine in the outer suburbs of London.
My work is very textile based, but everything starts with the good old fashioned pencil and paper! Observational drawing is at the foundation of everything I do. I particularly enjoy drawing people and reportage work.
The textile element of my work comes from having parents working in the textile industry as I was growing up. This meant that I had access to an industrial sewing machine, and bag fulls of unwanted fabrics and haberdashery to experiment with. I eventually combined my sewing abilities with my passion for drawing and this is what happened! My work plays on the boundaries between art and craft.

You will then cut out your felt slippers & embroider the cut pieces using your own unique pattern. Finally your exclusive slippers will be sewn and completed using hand stitching techniques.

About Alys:

Nine years ago after the birth of her son Alys Davis went looking for funky children’s clothes.  Unable to find anything she liked she decided to make her own.  Drawing on her skills as a fashion designer she created the Sidney brand, Sidney being her son’s middle name.
Alys Davis spent 14 years working for Mary Quant, starting in product design and then specialising in knitwear; becoming a mother gave her the inspiration to start designing for herself.  Alys has always been interested in vintage designs and fabric and decided to use her own collection of materials to make children’s clothes.  She used these fabrics to illustrate children’s t-shirts and the Sidney brand was born.
“I wanted to dress my son so he looked cool and I had a huge collection of materials cluttering up my house, so I thought why not use vintage materials to make modern clothes”.

An introduction to screen printing for textiles will provide you with a chance to develop your own design ideas into a textile print.
By using paper stencils, you will be taught how to turn your ideas into prints onto cotton during the session.  You will also be informed about photographic screen-printing techniques should you wish to carry on with the craft at a later date.
Each participant will be able to take away their prints from the day, which with a little handy work, you will be able to make an array of different items.
Samples will be on hand to illustrate the different effects screen-printing with stencils can produce.
Please bring an apron and wear something that can get dirty.
Plain cotton will be provided, but please bring any fabrics with you that you may wish to print onto.

About Sam: Mr Wingate was set up in 2006 as a printed T shirt Label by textile graduate Sam Wingate.
Initially selling from a market stall on Brick Lane, Mr Wingate soon built up a base of stockists and came to open a shop on Columbia Road in 2010.
The Shop has now gone but the Mr Wingate collection has expanded to include a range of homewares, all of which are still hand printed in Mr Wingate's East London studio.
Mr Wingate specializes in low-volume hand printing, which means each product that makes is way out of the studio is ever so slightly different from the next.
