Julia Davey Designer Feature

About Julia Davey:

I create bespoke tableware and homeware ceramic items from a small studio based in central Bath, Somerset. Colourful slips and hand drawn transfers are applied to create each item in limited batches. A final flourish of gold or silver lustre picks out detail and the reflective nature of the glaze. I trained at Central St Martins London, completing a Foundation course in Art and Design in 2004 before moving west to obtain a First Class BA(Hons) degree at Bath Spa University in 2007. Since then I have worked as an Art Lecturer at Cirencester College whilst building my business, including the purchase of my firs kiln! I have been featured in many blogs and magazines, most recently Country Living’s April issue.

Inspirations:

My inspirations range from the natural, tulips and daffodils in Spring and ladybirds crawling in my small garden to VW camper vans and toy robots. I find myself sketching on a weekly basis and am always happy to obtain commissions where I can draw from other people’s inspiring or personal photos to create a personal, individual range of work.

Best Sellers:

Along with my tableware I create bespoke frames of butterflies, pinned as though they are in museum cabinets of curiosity. I use a special process that I developed whilst on degree to create these wafer thin shapes and they are decorated with a combination of hand drawn and Stoke on Trent design transfers. Although these are more expensive than the tableware they are utterly unique and very special as they have a very high breakage rate in the kiln – it is therefore very exciting that they make it to the frame stage. A great item to pass on from generation to generation. (Background mounts, colours and frame sizes can be created on a commissioned basis.)

We Make Summer Fair:

I will be selling a range of work at the fair from teapots, mugs and milk jugs to butterdishes, soap dishes, cards, jewellery and butterfly frames. A gift, treat and price to suit everyone.
