Blueberry Blue Designer Feature:

About Blueberry Blue:

What did you start doing what you do?

I’ve worked all my adult life in the film business but since having my daughter three years ago, I realised I could no longer work the same hours and see her when she’s awake – so I chose my favourite things to do – bake and make - and combined them in a business.

Why did you choose your business name?

I wanted a food-related theme/name without it being exclusively so – and I love the colour of blueberries with their flush of white on that dark blue…

How long have you been doing what you do?

I started cooking when I was very young, standing on a chair in the kitchen watching and helping my mother – but only started my business Christmas 2010.

What else they you like to do?

I like to sew too.  I love art and wish I could paint, but I can’t .  So sewing  & cooking let me create with colours, texture and form in a way that pleases my creative streak.

What is your ultimate goal for your business?

To get a Royal Warrant and make biscuits for the Queen!

If you could make something for a famous person who and what would it be....?

I’d make an outfit of biscuits for Lady Gaga topped off with a crazy biscuit hat.

Inspirations:
My mother, who is my best friend, cook and artist. My daughter who is a constant joy and my husband who puts up with me with grace, patience and an unfailing sense of humour.

Best Sellers:

I love to make biscuits that are art.  These Japanese inspired biscuits are incredibly intricate and people can’t believe you can eat them!

We Make Summer Boutique:

Adults and children love my pencil biscuits, they’re fun and make everyone smile and talk.

Tara Winona Designer Feature:

About Tara Winona:

Why did you start doing what you do?
My mother says I began drawing before I could walk! As a small child I carried a sketchbook with me everywhere. The feeling of joy and sense of power I gained  in being able to capture and put down on paper the world around me was wonderful.
It grew from there into a career of creating and art directing large scale events, until one day the bright lights didn't call to me as much as a need to paint and draw for myself. One day I took a leap of faith and a couple of months off -  and began relearning rusty painting skills. It was strangely petrifying to say no to work, to sit still and explore my inner creative world rather than be in the big wide world out there. Strange not to be on a plane every week, to create completely for myself rather than a demanding client!
It felt so frightening that I painted my 'Leap of Faith' series to reassure myself and give me courage. Friends saw the paintings and asked if they could have copies. I realsied I wanted to share my art with the world - and thus my Etsy store was born.

Why did you chose your business name?
Tara Winona are my given names and I love them. Tara means many things in all languages, 'star' in Hindu, she is a Tibetan goddess and apparently a very ugly fish in Japanese! Winona means 'first daughter' from an Indian tribe in the area I was born in Canada. They feel like the essence of me.

How long have you been doing what you do?
I have been creating, drawing and painting forever in different forms.
I am a newbie to Etsy, I opened my Etsy shop in October last year. I have had my art studio, a little piece of paradise on a hidden island in London for a couple of years.

What else do you like to do?
Camping, reading, yoga, meditating, crazy overseas adventures, exploring the world and feeling like I have it inside me, photography, singing (although my sisters tell me I always sing flat!) Hanging out with my family and seeing my friends back home in Oz. Laughing with my husband, who is a very funny man! Speaking other languages, dressing in bright colours, dancing in fields. Oh! And writing books, I am in the throes of a children's book, watch this space!

What is your ultimate goal for your business?
My ultimate dream is for my business, my art, to take off and support me. Whilst I adore directing shows, there comes a time when getting on planes more than once a week can get tiring and feel disconnected from 'real' life. I would like to see where my art adventure goes and what I will be creating in a decade, 2 decades time!

If you could make something for a famous person who and what would it be....?
Hmmm.. rather than a famous person, how about 'people'? I would love to create a sculpture that sits in a park in a big city that people can interact with, sit on, feel inspired by, that gives children encouragement  to use their imagination and dream big dreams.

Inspirations:

My inspiration comes from my journey, in both my inner creative world and through  life. I take the experiences, sights, sounds, smells, triumphs and tears and translate them into something visual, a symbol of those feelings and experiences. I have a dream that my artwork may inspire others to live their lives more fully, to 'eat LiFE'!

My signature piece 'Listen'  is about the beginning of my journey...
When I began making big changes in my life, I realised I had to 'listen' very hard to myself to know which pathway my heart wanted to take. I discovered that my inner self was much braver and wilder than the outer me (she thought it was cool to say no to lots of shows and to paint, to buy a professional archival printer instead of a car! Not to mention falling in love and moving to London instead of back to Australia after a decade away and 6 weeks into the relationship - but that's a long story!)
In order to make changes in my life I first had to become my own best friend.

Cobbled Together Designer Feature:

About Cobbled Together:

What did you start doing what you do?
I started making children’s clothes when I had my son a couple of years ago now. I’ve always loved textiles and collected vintage pieces of fabric and I’m a keen knitter, and when I had a child I realised that there was not a great deal of inspiring children’s wear out there that was cute, practical and unique. But I haven’t stopped with children’s wear, I also make homewares like my furoshiki picnic rugs and accessories like hats and patchwork bags.

Why did you chose your business name?
Well, I can’t focus on one product, one method. I just can’t stop making and trying new techniques and styles. One minute I’m obsessed with patchwork, and every scrap gets pieced together, the next I’m up to my elbows in natural dyeing or appliqué or smocking or felting or quilting! So I’ve started a blog where I can keep track of my mini crafting obsessions. I guess the common thread throughout is that I always try to use recycled bits or materials salvaged from off cuts and scraps. That and collecting vintage fabrics and creating something modern yet with a timeless feel.

How long have you been doing what you do?
I’ve always made things, my mum was super crafty and she taught me how to knit and sew and I experienced a lot of different crafts at school like keeping silk worms and dyeing and spinning the silk and weaving.

What else they you like to do?
I love a good car boot sale. I have found some wonderful vintage fabrics. I especially love a good brocante. Recently I found some beautiful natural linen in a Norman brocante, in an flax producing region, it was so well loved and used! What’s more it had some holes that were exquisitely darned. I love to find fabric that was so loved that it had been painstakingly mended to get a few more years life out of it.  Some of the oldest linen I found was from a hospital in Paris and was stamped 1843. I’ve turned this piece into two pairs of my toddler pantaloons that I think are going to be very hard to part with.

What is your ultimate goal for your business?
My ultimate goal is to start a makers farm in Australia that was provide a place for people to come and learn and practice traditional crafts and experience life on a farm. I have started a blog about our transition from London to Australia and about our goals for creating a sustainable community with a focus on self sufficiency through making and growing. See http://farmingcraft.blogspot.com

If you could make something for a famous person who and what would it be....?

I think one of my smocked gingham hats would look fab on Judy Garland!

Inspirations:

Lately, whilst at home with a toddler, I find inspiration in the pages of a magazine called Hand/Eye. It beautifully documents the work and plight of traditional artisans across the globe. Every time I open that magazine I want to travel to far flung regions of the world and spend a few years learning a new technique from the masters.

Best Sellers:
Your best seller or signature piece of work:
These are my best selling toddler pantaloons. They are so perfect for babies and toddlers. They are based on the very roomy harem style trousers with added leg cuffs and a wide waistband. They are great because they do not restrict the movement and flexibility like many toddler trousers do so they can sit in that perfect lotus pose that only a baby can do!

We Make Summer Boutique:

At the shop you’ll also find my latest design, a full play suit version of my toddler pantaloons. Great for summer.

Also for little ones my best selling patchwork neckerchiefs made from my scraps of vintage fabrics.

Perfect for lazy summer days in the park, my Furoshiki applique picnic rugs fold up into their very own picnic bag.
